Simiron Inc was called upon to assist with a new flooring system for a 1,500 square-foot breakroom and bathroom at the City of Hazel Park Department of Public Works (DPS) building. HPDPS Director Tom Jones stated they were long overdue to upgrade the flooring that was badly stained and showing their wear-tear from the original construction in the early ’80s. The flooring needed more than a thin coating because of the high-traffic from the DPS crew; however, because the space served as their central break-area for lunch and breaks, they also couldn’t afford long downtime. Simiron worked with the DPS Director to come up with a plan that would minimize the downtime, meet their tight budget, and offer a quality flooring that could withstand the high traffic of construction boots and dirt.

The job required the grinding of the existing concrete flooring (Hazel Park DPS opted to remove all the existing VCT tiles according to Simiron’s specification for a cost-saving measure). The project seemed straightforward with the prep work and installation of a new decorative color chip flooring system…at first. All was moving great with the project until the Simiron crew shortly after grinding discovered that some part of the old VCT tile flooring uncovered original tiling that was suspected of containing asbestos. Simiron quickly recommended an asbestos-abatement professional to inspect the tiles and subsequently samples were sent to a third-party lab for proper analysis.

The same professional received the job to remediate the tile removal and proper disposal. After receiving the green light that it was safe, Simiron’s crew resumed work to finish the grinding and later applied the full-broadcast chip to the floor. The project overcame many obstacles and delays; however, the customer was pleased with the result, all due to great teamwork!
